Is AI an Existential Threat to our Health?

AI Poses Existential Threat and Risk to Health of Millions, Experts Warn

Artificial intelligence has been hailed as a game-changer in healthcare. It has the potential to improve diagnosis, treatment and access to care. However, a recent article in BMJ Global Health has raised concerns about the potential harm of AI in healthcare. The article, written by health professionals from around the world, calls for a halt to AI development until proper regulations are in place.

One key concern is the potential for AI
errors to harm patients

For example, AI-driven pulse oximetres have been found to overestimate blood oxygen levels in patients with darker skin. This results in the undertreatment of their hypoxia. This issue underscores the need for rigorous testing and regulation of AI technology in healthcare to ensure patient safety.

However, the risks of AI in healthcare go beyond patient safety. Experts also raise concerns about data privacy and security. With the vast amount of personal health data being collected and used by AI systems, there is a risk of it being misused or breached. This not only puts individuals at risk. It also erodes trust in the healthcare system as a whole.

The use of AI in healthcare could worsen
existing social and health inequalities

AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on. If this data is biased, then the AI will perpetuate that bias. This could result in certain groups of people, such as those from marginalised communities, receiving subpar care or being excluded from certain treatments. This not only has ethical implications, but also has the potential to worsen health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Beyond the immediate risks to patient safety and privacy, experts are also warning of the broader global threats posed by AI. The potential for AI to control and manipulate people as well as the use of lethal autonomous weapons could have catastrophic consequences for humanity. Additionally, the mass unemployment resulting from the widespread use of AI in healthcare and other industries could significantly impact mental health and well-being.

The article authors call for a halt to the development of self-improving artificial general intelligence until proper regulations are in place. This step is crucial to ensuring that AI is used responsibly and ethically in healthcare. It also highlights the need for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of AI systems to identify and address any potential harms.

In the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) has already begun incorporating AI into its healthcare services to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. However, it is essential that the NHS and other healthcare systems around the world prioritise patient safety and ethical considerations in the use of AI.

AI promises significant benefits in healthcare, but it also presents substantial risks

The authors believe that halting the development of AI until proper regulations are established is a necessary step. This ensures AI is used responsibly and ethically. As technology advances, we must prioritise the well-being of individuals and society as a whole.

This means not simply advancing, just because we can.

Until next time ...

About ...

I have had a long career in administration and office management. My working life started when I joined the Women's Royal Army Corps at age 17, where I trained as a Technical Clerk. Following my return to civilian life, worked as a data input clerk in the commercial sector, as an Administrator for Turning Point, a Not for profit organisation and lastly a Business Support Manager for Sport England a non-departmental government body.

However, my last two roles were made redundant, and I had no backup plan. One thing I knew for sure was, that I no longer wanted to work in the corporate world, but was unable to find a suitable role locally. At this point I was introduced to this amazing company that I now work with. At this event there was a video playing and I heard the word 'pension', so I listened because I was concerned about my pension provision. I do have a pension that pays me a grand total of £45 per month! That evening I saw the opportunity to grow my pension and change my lifestyle, so happily got registered.

Being an introvert, I had some challenges to overcome,  so it took me a while to get going. But the training and the personal development I've had since then means that I have become more confident person and have met some amazing people along the way.

The future looks amazing because I have the opportunity to help others create the life they want and to continue to grow my business for me and my family  I am grateful to my friend for exposing me to this phenomenal company.

I am a mother of two grown-up sons and a grandmother of three.  💗
