Networking plays a vital role in every industry, particularly in the job market of the UK. Yet, getting started in networking can be daunting, especially for beginners.","wordCount":80}

how to get the most out of networking

Networking online, Connecting minds and ideas, World wide web of friends

Networking goes beyond simply swapping business cards and participating in events. It's about fostering genuine relationships and establishing connections within your field. In the UK, networking plays a vital role in advancing your professional growth and can significantly impact your career. To maximise the benefits of networking, it's important to adopt a strategic approach. Here are some key tips to enhance your networking efforts in the UK.

1. Be prepared

Before going to a networking event, it's important to do some homework. Look into the attendees and their backgrounds to pinpoint potential connections and engage in meaningful discussions. Also, ensure that your elevator pitch is prepared - a brief yet impactful introduction about yourself and your professional history. It should be captivating and unforgettable, serving as a great way to leave a positive first impression.

2. Attend events

In the UK, there are always networking events taking place. Try to participate in as many as possible, particularly those relevant to your industry. These gatherings offer a great chance to connect with new people and grow your network. Think about becoming a member of professional associations or communities linked to your profession. These organisations frequently organise events and training sessions that can assist you in acquiring new abilities and interacting with individuals who share similar interests.

3. Be genuine

In networking, being real and true to yourself is crucial. Others can sense when you're not being sincere, which can damage your professional image. Instead, prioritise creating genuine bonds with individuals. Inquire about their jobs and passions, while also sharing your own stories and perspectives. This approach fosters trust and cultivates a significant connection.

4. Follow up

After participating in a networking event, it's important to reach out to the individuals you met. Consider sending them a brief email or connecting with them on LinkedIn. This will help maintain the dialogue and ensure you remain on their mind. If you committed to sharing any information or following up on a particular subject, be sure to do so in a timely manner. This demonstrates your dependability and professionalism.

5. Offer value

Building a network is a reciprocal process. It's not solely focused on what you can receive from others, but also on what you can contribute. Share your knowledge and skills generously. If you have the ability to assist someone with a challenge or offer valuable advice, take the opportunity to do so. This approach will not only set you apart, but also establish you as a respected and knowledgeable expert in your field.

6. Be professional

When it comes to networking, it's important to uphold a professional image. This means dressing suitably, arriving on time and communicating in a respectful manner. Keep in mind that you are representing both yourself and your brand, so it's essential to create a positive impression. Pay attention to your body language and vocal tone as these non verbal signals can significantly influence how others view you. Remember, communication is 80% body language, 20% verbal.

7. Don't be afraid to ask for help

Networking is all about fostering connections and that means seeking assistance when necessary. If you are looking for a job or seeking guidance, don't hesitate to tap into your network. Most individuals are more than willing to lend a hand and you never know where a simple chat might take you. Just remember to give back and offer support whenever possible.

Remember, networking is an essential skill for success in the UK job market. By following these suggestions, you can maximise your networking efforts and establish valuable relationships that can enhance your career. Keep in mind to be prepared, attend events, be authentic, follow up, provide value, maintain professionalism and don't shy away from seeking help. With these principles in mind, you'll be well on your way to harnessing the power of networking in the UK.","wordCount":625}

About ...

I have had a long career in administration and office management. My working life started when I joined the Women's Royal Army Corps at age 17, where I trained as a Technical Clerk. Following my return to civilian life, worked as a data input clerk in the commercial sector, as an Administrator for Turning Point, a Not for profit organisation and lastly a Business Support Manager for Sport England a non-departmental government body.

However, my last two roles were made redundant, and I had no backup plan. One thing I knew for sure was, that I no longer wanted to work in the corporate world, but was unable to find a suitable role locally. At this point I was introduced to this amazing company that I now work with. At this event there was a video playing and I heard the word 'pension', so I listened because I was concerned about my pension provision. I do have a pension that pays me a grand total of £45 per month! That evening I saw the opportunity to grow my pension and change my lifestyle, so happily got registered.

Being an introvert, I had some challenges to overcome,  so it took me a while to get going. But the training and the personal development I've had since then means that I have become more confident person and have met some amazing people along the way.

The future looks amazing because I have the opportunity to help others create the life they want and to continue to grow my business for me and my family  I am grateful to my friend for exposing me to this phenomenal company.

I am a mother of two grown-up sons and a grandmother of three.  💗
